BWEA

The outstanding performance of the BWEA team was again recognised at the Queensland Engineering Excellence Awards where BWEA received Highly Commended Award in the Environment Division for its Oxley Creek project.

Oxley Creek Water Reclamation Plant not only has reduced the discharge of nutrients to our river and Moreton Bay, but it has also introduced a number of major new initiatives for the first time in the Southern Hemisphere.

Theses include:

  • Thermal Sludge Hydrolysis – this plant 'pressure cooks' sludges emanating from the treatment process resulting in their being better able to be digested. The result is that biogas production has been increased about 50% resulting in the generation of more green energy from the plant.
  • The mass and volume of biomass produced has been reduced substantially and truck movements associated with Brisbane Water's biomass handling have been reduced by 60% with attendant benefits to the environment and reducing traffic from our roads.
  • The resulting biomass meets class 'A' requirements, enabling it to be used in potting mixes and in gardens, eliminating the need to buy soils for parks and gardens in the city.
  • A nutrient rich stream associated with the plant has been treated to recover struvite, a slow release fertiliser product from what has been a waste.

The Oxley Creek has also become a very much better neighbour with odour from the plant now treated and contained well within the site boundaries resulting in work at the plant also being far more pleasant.

In every way, the environment has been a winner in the extraordinary efforts that BWEA has made to deliver facilities that are recognised by the Institution of Engineers as leading the world.

Industrial Re-Use

Aquatec Maxcon has been awarded a contract by Lion Nathan to design and construct a water treatment and re-use facility at its XXXX Brewery in Milton, Brisbane. This facility will substantially reduce the water discharged from the brewery and will dramatically reduce the brewery's requirements for potable water taking it to world leading performance.

The treatment plant will utilise world leading Paques Internal Circulation UASB technology to treat the high strength waste anaerobically, resulting in the use of little energy while producing valuable of biogas. The water will then be treated aerobically in a Paques Circox granular biomass reactor before flotation and filtration to remove solids and deliver high quality water. This product will then be further enhanced by microfiltration and reverse osmosis to deliver product water suitable for use in the brewery's boilers and wash down facilities.

Industrial Waste Treatment

Visy Australia has awarded Aquatec Maxcon the contract to design and construct a high strength waste treatment plant at its Smithfield facility in NSW. The treatment facility will dramatically improve the quality of water streams from the plant and dramatically reduce the brewery's requirements for potable water taking it to world leading performance.

Business Acquisition

Aquatec Maxcon has acquired the contracting business of Eimco Water Technologies, formerly Copa Water, in Australia. This results in Aquatec Maxcon having some 18 additional staff and offices in Sydney and Adelaide. Consequently we have offices in all Eastern States which will enhance our ability to better service our customers.

Aquatec Maxcon will complete a number of contracts on behalf of Eimco Water Technologies and will now market the Hybrid Biological Nutrient Reduction Technology and its associated SinkAir aerator and Gas Locked Siphon (GLS) decanter system. These robust technologies have demonstrated the ability to cost effectively deliver reliable nutrient reduction and have wide application with over 660 operating plants currently around the world. These technologies compliment Aquatec Maxcon's existing wide range of high efficiency technologies for municipal and industrial applications, providing even further options to ensure that clients receive the best possible technology in any application.

Hervey Bay

Aquatec Maxcon has delivered the membranes for the Eli Creek Water Reclamation Plant at Hervey Bay. This plant serves 21,000 persons and utilises Aquatec Maxcon's world leading Kubota membrane bioreactor technology to deliver microfiltered disinfected water directly from the bioreactor without further treatment. This high quality water is suitable for re-use and can reduce demand on domestic storages and supplies. The plant will be brought into service during 2008.
